Gene Ontology: process, function and component for CDH23 (Amigo)

Picture

Analysis:

GO terms indicate the cdh23 protein is an integral membrane protein with cell adhesion processes. Its GO function of calcium ion binding suggests that calcium may have a role in either the localization of cdh23 to the membrane, OR it may play a role in other protein binding, in order to establish a cell adhesion complex (see Experiment and Future Directions).

Other biological processes not included on chart: photoreceptor cell maintenance, sensory perception of light and sound stimulus.

Other predicted features of the gene product: AA residues 1-20 is a potential pre-peptide signal. AA residue 21 is potentially post-translationally modified as an N-palmitoyl cysteine or an S-diacylglycerol cysteine (Potential). This amino acid is believed to have lipid interaction.

Two flow charts are displayed above. The chart on the left describes GO function, location, and process of cdh23 as applied to cells in the hearing pathway. The flow chart on the right describes the calcium binding function of cdh23 throughout the body. The flow chart concerning the vision pathway is not displayed as our research primarily focuses on the hearing pathway.
